Advanced Biodegradable and Sustainable Super-Absorbent Hydrogels for Agricultural Applications
About Us
Kyoga SAHs Labs has manufactured biodegradable and sustainable superabsorbent hydrogels (SAHs) using cellulose-based polymers, which are both biocompatible and non-toxic. Through next-generation technology solutions, the company has addressed key challenges faced by agricultural customers, improving productivity, increasing crop yield, and reducing nutrient loss. By incorporating natural char nanoparticles and natural cross-linking mechanisms, Kyoga SAHs Labs has enhanced the water retention capacity of the SAHs and enabled a controlled release of fertilizers.
Problems To Solve
Only 3% of the world’s water is fresh water, and two-thirds of that is unavailable for our use.
More than half the world’s wetlands have disappeared.
Climate change is causing shortages and droughts in some areas and floods in others.Agriculture consumes 70% of the world’s available freshwater. However, around 60% of this is wasted due to:
- Cultivation of water-intensive crops
- Inefficient irrigation techniques
- Faulty or inefficient irrigation systems
Chemical, or conventional fertilizers, are synthetic products that appear in many forms, such as granular or liquid. About 80% of phosphorus and 40%–70% of the nitrogen in conventional fertilizers cannot be used by crops. They are rapidly lost to the environment resulting in a waste of resources and environmental pollution. Some of the harmful effects of chemical fertilizers:
- Chemical burn to crops
- Increased air pollution
- Acidification of the soil
- Waterway pollution
Our Solution
Kyoga SAHs Labs has addressed the issue of water scarcity by developing superabsorbent hydrogels (SAHs), which are recognized as a promising solution. The company has used natural char nanoparticles and natural cross-linkers to enhance water absorption and retention capacity. By utilizing a natural cross-linking mechanism, they have increased the number of hydrophilic groups, expanding their size after swelling and ultimately improving soil porosity, which in turn has provided better oxygenation to plant roots. Additionally, Kyoga SAHs Labs has produced SAHs loaded with fertilizers, designed for the slow release of nutrients, which is expected to enhance productivity, nutrient content, and profitability. The advantages of SAHs in agriculture include:
- Prevention of active ingredient leaching into groundwater
- Improvement of carbon assimilation rate during early plant growth
- Stabilization of fertilizers in the soil
- Reduction of irrigation costs
- Enhancement of plant growth
