Tackling water scarcity and agricultural challenges with Kyoga SAHs Labs
Water scarcity, droughts, soil depletion, and inefficient use of chemical fertilizers are becoming some of the biggest challenges in agriculture today. With Kyoga SAHs Labs, we are committed to providing a sustainable solution to these problems through our biodegradable superabsorbent hydrogels (SAHs), designed to help farmers maximize productivity while conserving resources and protecting the environment.
- Addressing Water Scarcity in Agriculture: We all know that only 3% of Earth’s water is freshwater, and much of that is locked away in glaciers. With agriculture consuming a staggering 70% of the world’s available freshwater, it’s clear that the inefficient use of water is no longer an option. That’s where our SAHs come in. By using natural char nanoparticles and natural cross-linkers, we’ve developed a way to significantly increase water retention in soils. These hydrogels absorb large amounts of water, reduce irrigation costs, and prevent the leaching of essential nutrients into the groundwater. This not only helps plants survive in drought conditions but also ensures that water is used much more efficiently.
- Combatting Drought Conditions: In places like Canada, droughts are becoming more frequent, especially in regions like the Prairies and the southern interior of British Columbia. Nearly 74% of Canada’s agricultural land is classified as abnormally dry or worse. Kyoga SAHs provide an innovative solution by increasing soil porosity and ensuring better oxygenation to plant roots, which helps crops thrive even in drought conditions. Our SAHs swell when they absorb water, allowing plants to access moisture during dry spells and improving their survival rates.
- Moving Beyond Chemical Fertilizers: Traditional chemical fertilizers have long been a staple in agriculture, but they come with serious drawbacks—waterway pollution, soil acidification, and wasted nutrients that don’t get absorbed by plants. Only 30%–60% of nitrogen and phosphorus in these fertilizers is actually used by crops, with the rest lost to the environment. Kyoga SAHs solve this problem by offering a slow-release fertilizer system. This allows plants to receive nutrients over an extended period, reducing waste and maximizing the utilization of nutrients. With a fertilizer release rate of 75% over 25 days, we’re confident that this approach will increase productivity, nutrient content, and ultimately, profitability for farmers.
- Enhancing Soil Health and Efficiency: The overuse of soils for centuries without replenishing their nutrients has led to soil depletion and reduced crop yields. To tackle this, we’ve designed Kyoga SAHs to not only absorb water but also enhance soil aeration and porosity, ensuring better oxygenation of plant roots. This leads to healthier, more resilient crops. Plus, our hydrogels are completely biodegradable and non-toxic, developed from cellulose extracted from agricultural waste, meaning they are kind to the environment and do not harm soil microbial populations.
- The Right Nutrient Balance for Better Yields: Phosphorus is crucial for plant health, but getting the right balance is key. That’s why Kyoga SAHs are loaded with ammonium polyphosphate and other nutritious compounds to ensure that plants get the nutrients they need for optimal growth. Our innovative solution supports soil health and boosts the overall productivity of the agricultural system.
- Pioneering a Sustainable Future: At Kyoga SAHs Labs, we’re not just about solving the challenges of today—we’re thinking about the long-term sustainability of agriculture. By using biodegradable, cellulose-based SAHs that are eco-friendly and resource-efficient, we’re paving the way for a more sustainable and productive future for farmers everywhere.
